Citra Wheat IPA
« on: May 29, 2014, 12:38:58 pm »
I have some old citra that I have to use. I don't do IPAs often so be gentle. This is kind of based on a citra wheat recipe that I brew regularly. I probably will not brew this again unless it somehow turns out better than expected. I know there will probably be mixed feelings about a citra ipa but here goes...

50% Wheat
35% Pilsner
10% Munich
5% carapils

11 g Bravo 60 min
28 g Citra 20 min
28 g Citra 10 min
28 g Citra 0 min
56 g Citra dry hop
28 g magic hop dust dry hop - lying around, might as well use it.

US-05
1.057
56 IBUs
6.2% ABV
On Tap/Bottled: IPL, Adjunct Vienna, Golden Stout, Honey Lager
Fermenting: IPA
Up Next: mexi lager, Germerican pale ale

I'd really recommend adding something else in the late additions. That much Citra all alone might end up tasting like drinking a mango smoothie. It doesn't have to be a lot, especially if you want the Citra to be up front. If you replaced your 10-minute addition with an ounce of something like Centennial, then that might add enough citrus and complexity just to round out the Citra.

Otherwise, the recipe looks about right to me for an entry-level IPA.

Got ya. I realize it is going to be a Citra bomb which isn't necessarily a good thing. Thanks!

I love a good Citra bomb. I brew an APA with a similar schedule for my wife, who loves Three Floyds' Zombie Dust, which is all Citra
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.
