Since I don't keg, I use this stuff after transferring to the secondary.  Is all the o2 removed from the headspace?  No, but it is reduced.  I was kidding about blowing through a millipore filter.

Now the real question is do I need one... I don't secondary. Is it necessary to purge the dead space on your bottling bucket?

No. It's not necessary. Most people don't and do just fine.

However, if you can do it cheaply and effectively it's certain not a bad idea. I purge my carboys with co2 if I'm transferring to a secondary. If you want to so it with an bucket it may not be as effective. I would do it pre transfer rather than after.

A recent thread on the probrewers forum points out that using nitrogen to purge vessels is much cheaper than CO2.

But who has a tank of nitrogen?

I'm curious to learn more about using Nitrogen for purging. Makes good sense from a cost savings standpoint for the pros.
