Has anyone used a cool zone for fermentation control?
« on: June 06, 2014, 01:34:43 pm »
I have a SS brewing bucket and thought about buying a cooling jacket from cool zone (link below) for fermentation control.  Has anyone used this system, if so what do you think?

I haven't used a Cool Zone, but I'm wondering what your source of cold is.

looks like you pump cold liquid through the jacket.

seems like an excessively complex and expensive solution for cooling a single fermenter to me. unless I'm missing something you would need a jacket and pump for each fermenter you want to cool.

adding the cost of even a cheap sub-pump, some way to chill your chilling water or glycol, temp controller, thermowell, etc. I bet you can get a used fridge, temp controller, heating pad combo and chill 2 or more fermenters.

Exactly.

This thing looks like a $10 solution to a $1 problem.

Yep.  That's what I do, with a thermowell and it works fine.  Typically an 18 cu ft or 18.2 cu ft works.  Test by first inserting your fermenters before buying if you don't have the used fridge on hand.
