Leaky keg lids...gaskets...lube
« on: April 01, 2010, 04:48:12 pm »
I've never had problems with leaky keg lids until now.  It used to be if a lid was leaking, I would simply turn it around in the other direction, and the problem was solved.  But, this doesn't always work anymore.  Now, I find myself swapping out lids until I get one that won't leak.  I've even resorted to using keg lube, which I never had to do before.

How long before those black gaskets have to be replaced?

Visually, they look fine, but do they shrink over time?

I always use keg lube on all the O-rings. If you replaced the O-rings when you got your kegs you should never have to replace them unless they get damaged somehow.
If Homebrew & BBQ aren't the answer, then you're askin' the wrong questions... Cheers!!!

Okay, thanks.

Now, I clean my kegs and parts in Sun Oxygen Cleaner.  It doesn't seem to have any affect on keg lube.

How do I remove the lube from the underneath side, of the keg's top, where the o-ring is seated?

What do you soak your keg parts in that will remove the lube from the o-rings?

I actually use Harvey's Silicone Grease (waterproof) from a plumbing supply store.

Maybe it's the Harvey's.  I don't have any issues with Oxiclean removing Keg Lube.

Keg Lube can be removed by Wiping it down with a soft cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol.

I bend the lid or keg edge with a small crescent wrench to fix the leaks.

Williams Brewing sells a slightly thicker and softer lid O-ring that seals better, but is a little pricy. I wish I could find them at wholesale prices. Then I would buy them for every keg.

What about this outfit below:

If you're able to find the part, could you post it?  Thanks.

I have looked there and not found it. It needs to be a little thicker and softer than the usual.
