Regal Pale Ale
« on: July 11, 2014, 08:40:25 pm »
This was my brew day -- Regal Pale Ale -- the National Homebrew Competition gold-medal American pale ale recipe.  I did this for the 2014 Big Brew and it was a hit so this is a sequel.

My set up

command central

dough in

first runnings

3.5 gal spot on

second runnings

a bit over 7 gal

I love this new mash/lauter tun.  I have about 1/2 a cup dead space.

boil started - first hop addition

boil complete -- draining the hop spider

cooling the wort

ready for the US-05 yeast to turn my wort into beer

The recipe calls for an OG of 1.056 but Beersmith says 1.052. I got 1.052 out of it which is cool. Beersmith says I got just north of 77% efficiency. I'm good with that.

I think it came with that - one of those limited edition things....mine is boring blue, but it works!

I also noticed the smoker - my second hobby, too!

Do you tilt the cooler when you batch sparge?  I think I have the same cooler ( 72 quart extreme 5 day ) and I seem to have more dead space than a couple of cups or my math/beersmith profile is just wrong.  Do you my sharing your beersmith equipment profile?  Thanks for the post and pictures.

Yep, sure do. I use a short piece of 2 X 4 to prop up the end opposite the drain. Probably cuts your 'dead space' in half.

Mine is the smaller 36 Qt. I had to tilt my old one but don't have to tilt this one at all. Plus, I don't lose heat during the mash.  I'll figure out how to share my profile and get back to you.

It did.  SWMBO got me that for a gift.  It's so fast it has FLAMES!  LOL

My brew area shares space with my outdoor "kitchen".  It's really just a couple cookers and a home built center table (aka "cheap and easy") but it works!
