What did I brew?
« on: July 07, 2014, 06:58:03 pm »
My intention was to brew a Dampfbier.  However, my liquid weizen yeast was DOA in the Alabama heat even with the optional ice pack so I reverted to US-05 as my emergency backup (I keep a pack on hand for just such emergencies).

7 lbs Pilsner (2 Row) Ger (2.0 SRM) Grain
3 lbs Munich Malt (9.0 SRM) Grain
1.00 oz Hallertauer Mittelfrueh [4.00 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop
1.00 oz Hallertauer Mittelfrueh [4.00 %] - Boil 30.0 min Hop

OG 1.050
FG 1.010
Bitterness: 23 IBUs
Est Color: 5.6 SRM

So...what would you call this?  A Blonde Ale?

Yep, should be a very tasty blonde ale.

Call it a Helles Blond and impress your friends. Sounds like a killer Lawnmower beer.

That Dampfbier sounds interesting - I just googled it and read the Horst Dornbusch article from an old BYO mag.  I would give that another try in the fall (or whenever yeast survival is not an issue)...I am definitely putting it on my list to brew.

+1.  It's been on my 'to brew' list, but I always manage not to brew it. I think it sounds great.

It's definitely on the "to brew" list.  Like you said: after the danger of yeast death thru delivery is not a factor.

I reordered the ingredients for a Dampfbier but ordered dry Danstar Weizen yeast this time.  ...but the Blonde Ale turned out fantastic! I tapped it last night. First time I've used US-05. Not bad at all.
