Off looking beer
« on: July 23, 2014, 06:29:24 pm »
Bottling a 5 gallon extract tonight and noticed a strange film forming on top of the beer in the bottling bucket. Almost looks like a very thin layer of plastic wrap. Any idea? Remnants from the Whirfloc? Loose hop residue from dry hopping pellets?

I'm guessing you have the beginnings of a sour beer.

Awesome! Maybe I shouldn't bother bottling.

I should add that I saw this layer while actively transferring and didn't notice on top of the beer in the fermenter.

I'd base your judgement on taste. And it has nothing to do with WF.

Could be any number of things, but watch the bottlenecks for rings forming and taste it - if refrigerated shortly after carbonation, you should be able to slow down any bad buggers, if any are in there...

I did see a tiny bit of white stuff in the fermenter. Not on top but towards the bottom while siphoning.

I wouldn't worry. didn't you dry hop this beer? it might well be hop oils from that.

Most likely hop oils.

Many bacteria and wild yeast form pellicles, which can look like different kinds of film on the beer but they won't form that quickly and certainly not in beer swirling around your bottling bucket.
