Pumpkin Beers...
« on: July 26, 2014, 06:11:16 am »
I've seen some advertisements for commercial and HB pumpkin beers in JULY. Can we just make these available all year and stop creeping the release back every year?

In the same genre - I saw Sam Adams Octoberfest at Costco a few days back.

That's not too out of the question. Timing would be about right for New Zealand hops.

Because I make a lot of seasonal beers and meads, as in make the product when the ingredients are ripe or otherwise available fresh and local I'm always a bit turned off by a blueberry ale in july or a pumpkin ale in October because its obviously a marketing ploy. Oh its blueberry ale during blueberry season! Did you ferment it in the microwave? No, its made from something from who knows where and who knows when.

I was at the store yesterday and saw about eight pumpkin beers arranged in a display. I don't get it.

Breweries are taking a page from the fashion retailers.  Swimwear in January, shorts and t-shirts in march, fall jackets in May/June and winter clothes in July.

They can also learn from holiday sales. Halloween candy starting in July, Thanksgiving on Labor Day followed 3 days later by Early Christmas door busters, New Years on Thanksgiving weekend, Valentines day on Jan 3rd and on and on and on.

That's always my reaction to pumpkin beers, whenever they're displayed.

I went to the "seasonal" section of the supermarket to see if they had sunscreen yesterday. They had 1/2 an aisle of halloween candy.

I believe I read that BBC heralded in this trend in beer but it's the idea that when seasonal beers roll out you get nostalgic about the seasonal style so you are most likely to buy the first one you find. So the earlier it comes out the more likely the brewery is to pick up those sales.

Eventually "new" pumpkin beers will come out in December, just in time for next fall.

Hell, I'm celebrating Memorial Day 2017 right now. I'm assuming I brewed a pretty good beer for it.     ;)
