Yeast Cleanup
« on: August 03, 2014, 03:55:29 pm »
I bottled a 5 gallon batch 11 days ago and noticed that the bottles all have a very fine "silt" in the bottle. The beer itself is very clear, there is a small bit of sediment at the bottom. You can see this silt and it moves around if you twist the bottles slowly, seems to be only on the glass edge. Yeast still working? Sugar?

Could still be working at only 11 days, give it a few more days and try a bottle. If it's fully carbonated a little fridge time will drop all the yeast and it should pack down into a little cake at the bottom.

IME some strains do this better than others

It is supposed to do that.  All bottle conditioned beer will have this layer. That is the yeast that is carbonating the bottle for you.

I know that. I'm asking about the fine stuff floating.

Test one for carbonation. If it's carbbed up cold crash and see if you can't get all the yeast to drop to bottom. Depending on strain and how much yeast you brought over to bottling bucket you may have some powdery yeast floating round but it should drop out given time and, preferably, cold temps.
