Vampire Proof Beer
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:13:45 am »

I am currently drying some of my barley in the same shed where I am curing my garlic. I'm not worried about the garlic odor permeating the barley because of all the steps that the barley will be going through. I am about to harvest hops this weekend though and I wonder about the garlic odor if I dried the hops in the same shed. I kind of think it wouldn't matter but would hate to get garlic aroma in my hops.

does it smell garlicky in the shed? if so I would dry your hops elsewhere.

you can build a herb drier ala alton brown out of a box fan, a stack of clean HVAC filters, and some bungy cords and speed dry at low temp just about anywhere you don't mind smelling hops.

Oh, it smells garlicky. I'll look into the Alton brown trick. In the past its been a box fan and screens in the cellar but this shed is particularly dry and can be made perfectly dark.

Box fan and screens is good. I'm not too sure, but if it's really dry the hops will dry pretty quickly. I'd try a small amount and see if they smell like garlic at the end. My guess is it would take a while to absorb the aroma, but I might be wrong.

This is more likely. Everything in my freezer smells like hops...

From what I can tell from your posts and blog that's because everything in your freezer IS hops....
