We hired tons of guys. In the early days they got a day's worth of training and then they were on their own. Much later, it went to a couple of days training. But like I said, not many stayed. It is just so physical and the pace is so high, you can only maintain it for so long. In an unguarded moment, a VP told one of the stewards (yes, the location I was at was a union shop) that the place he was originally from, the pace was set so high that the selectors would only last about 5-6 years before they couldn't do the job fast enough anymore. At that point, the company would fire them and hire new.
And the reason anyone tries to stay now is the incentive pay that was put in place several years ago. We had one selector make over 90K one year. That was a lot of overtime and a lot of cases picked. Now, however, I hear he can barely walk 'cuz his back is shot.
