Wow. I used to visit here to learn to brew better beer.

Wow right back at you! You are in the "PUB" forum in Off Topic. If you want to continue to provide your brain with brewing knowledge then go read the posts in the General Brewing threads. But no need to knock on on-line friends having an off topic conversation. If you don't like it feel free not to comment.

I have observed that in today's work force, bosses have fewer requirements

1. Show up on time
2. Stay all day
3. Don't steal
4. Do you know anything at all

If you are really good at a three of those you can fudge on one of them.

That's no joke. It's not fair to over generalize, but many of the early 20-somethings I work around give you 2 of the 4, if you're lucky.

I retired out of a foodservice company.  In the early days, we used to have guys who would work half the day and in the middle of an order, just leave their equipment in an aisle and walk out.  If we had one guy in twenty stay, it was lucky.  After the economy went south 10 years ago and jobs got a lot harder to find, you would see guys who had never done manual labor struggle to get through 11-12 hours (because there were no 8 hour days).
With the bad economy and the increasing technology the company was able to bring in, the company was able to raise the standards to very high levels.  If you don't pick your orders fast enough or if you make too many mistakes, you will be fired.  Call off too many times within a certain period, you will be fired.  A year or two after one of the employees had a heart attack and died on the warehouse floor, they hired his son.  And when the son called off for the second time within his probation period, they fired him.  I used to say that there was no reason to learn somebody's name because until they had been there for at least a year, you didn't know if they would make it or not.

My line of work is hard to get in therefore hard to get out. From date of hire to first day on your own its about a year. Thats also the year that you are at will. They tend to look pretty hard for flaws and dump folks quick during probation. But after that as long as you do everything perfect they pretty puch leave you alone.

We hired tons of guys.  In the early days they got a day's worth of training and then they were on their own.  Much later, it went to a couple of days training.  But like I said, not many stayed.  It is just so physical and the pace is so high, you can only maintain it for so long.  In an unguarded moment, a VP told one of the stewards (yes, the location I was at was a union shop) that the place he was originally from, the pace was set so high that the selectors would only last about 5-6 years before they couldn't do the job fast enough anymore.  At that point, the company would fire them and hire new.
And the reason anyone tries to stay now is the incentive pay that was put in place several years ago.  We had one selector make over 90K one year.  That was a lot of overtime and a lot of cases picked.  Now, however, I hear he can barely walk 'cuz his back is shot.

All the drummers I've known have been exceptionally talented... at getting fired, getting speeding tickets, locking their keys in the car, etc

Q: why did the drummer leave his sticks on the windshield?
A: he was parked in a handicapped spot

Q: how do you know the stage is level?
A: the drummer drools out of both sides of his mouth

Q: what do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?
A: homeless

Q: How can you tell there's a drummer at your door?
A: The knocking keeps speeding up.

Q: How do you get him to leave?
A: Pay for the pizza.

The other thing I should have mentioned is this particular person ruined 12K+ worth of beer on Monday by trying to clean a tank that had beer in it.

And he works for you, present tense?  Does he have incriminating photos of you?

My thought exactly.  Bye bye.

There are no compromising pictures of me anywhere. My facebook page doesn't even have a cuss word on it.

And I'm glad you guys aren't my manager. Mistakes do happen. It was an honest mistake. He is an otherwise hard worker and I could not get by without him and don't want to roll the dice on a new hire. And when you pay adults 10 an hour it's hard to find good ones, even when they are natural born losers.

When I first started my career in graphics I made 2 mistakes that costs the company I worked for several hundred dollars. But they were honest mistakes and while I got my ass chewed I did not get fired.

You have to balance the good with the bad with every employee. Yeah, he has cost me some money. But he also has saved my ass many more times times.

That said, if it happens again he will be fired. But I also learned that I have to really keep my eye on him.

If nothing else, Keith, you're making me really glad I don't have to hire any other brewhouse employees… Now front of house staff, that's going to be a fun process. ::)

Fair enough, I was just wondering if he had any redeeming values at all.  I can understand venting.  Hope he doesn't read the AHA forum :-)

I'm all for a second chance, but I was picking up that he was nothing but a screw-up.  Delaying the inevitable doesn't help anybody.

Pretty funny I got into the position of defending him in this thread when it became a question of my judgement. ;)

He is  a pretty hard worker but he's more interested in buying cigarettes than car tags.

He definitely doesn't read the aha forum. He works In a brewery but he only has vague idea how to brew. He can squeegee the s*** out of the floor though! ;)
