The Drunken Botanist
« on: August 29, 2014, 01:07:34 pm »
Someone mentioned making bitters in a recent thread, which I would like to try.

While googling it, I came across this book that I think sounds pretty interesting.

Oddly, these days I have a ton of bitters, but no Angostura. Right now, I'm using Scrappy's as my replacement.

Yes, but I'm busy and they are hand written. I will try to post a couple in the next few days. Just wanted you to know they are coming and you aren't being ignored.

And if it's that one, I just got it yesterday. Any favorite bitters recipes from it?

I made Grapefruit Hops Bitters based on the grapefruit bitters recipe in that book. That was one recipe I am looking for. I probably doubled the hops and used homegrown cascade  hops. I also think I altered the bitter hers use, there might not have been gentian root. My girlfriend keeps a lot of herbs/ roots etc. around for medicinal use so we experimented a bit. I like adding the grapefruit hops bitters to gin and tonics or just soda water. I messed around with a drink that had , gin, those bitters, soda water, and malt extract. We also made apple bitters from that book that were good. The favorite bitters we made that I will post when I dig it up is one we came up with with hickory nuts that I smoked. It's great with whiskey drinks.
