At that concentration, do you still rinse?   I like the idea of using bleach but worry about having to boil a bunch of water to rinse with.

I used to rinse with hop tap water; however, it's probably not necessary at a dilution ratio of 1 tablespoon to 5-gallons of water (~39ppm when using 5% sodium hypochlorite ).  I ran my water heater at 130F in those days.

For reference, while I may be wrong, I believe that public water supplies chlorinate water to 1ppm.  That's equivalent to mixing approximately one pint of the 39ppm sanitizing solution into 38 pints of chlorine-free wort.

I will throw this out, as I read it a long time back, rinse with the cheapest Americam Lager. It is clean and free from chloramines. Overkill, but not so expensive if you have doubts.

I love that quote! But I'm not running out for any cheap American lager just for sanitizer

Chimay would be overkill

It is also not filtered and pasteurized like the cheap American Lagers.

I'd nominate something insipid and undrinkable like the last couple of Schaefer's or Weidemann's I had, but the residue of that might be worse than the chlorophenols.    ;)

It is great stuff. I love 5Star Chemical...now I just wish they would get that 5.2 crap off the market!
LOL!!!

I too have fallen victim to the cloudy starsan=bad starsan statement.  I now use my cheapo ph meter to check it before using it.

I don't use bleach solution to sanitize before brewing because I'm afraid of any leftover chlorine. I do sometimes however use it to sanitize equipment AFTER brewing so I'm putting it away with absolutely no population of critters on it. I especially like to do this to my racking cane and bottling wand. I use 1 step for everything else because its what I always use and it seems like the only thing that will clean a carboy or bottle that is stained from a dark melomel.
Don't let the bastards cheer you up.
