Yeast starter
« on: October 28, 2014, 02:34:08 pm »
My kit included a Yeast Bay Vermont Ale vial of yeast...of course it wasn't cold when it arrived (the 2 cold packs didn't survive the Florida heat!) and I'm wondering if I need to do a starter for the 5 gallon extract kit.

Maybe the temp doesn't have anything to do with and I should just do a starter anyways?

Yep a good idea. Starters verify  you have good yeast and allow you to build the proper cell count for your recipe. i use http://www.brewersfriend.com/yeast-pitch-rate-and-starter-calculator to determine my starters as well as prior experience with the yeast and recipe.
