How to setup a beer engine/hand pump with Sanky keg?
« on: November 23, 2014, 10:43:21 am »
Hi chaps,

I've got an ale engine and a 30litre Sanky keg I want to start using to serve cask ale from. My plan is to cask condition the ale and pull pints without using added pressure.

Design:
Attach coupler to keg, gas line in is connected to a Mylar balloon containing CO2, beer line out is connected to ale engine line in. The pump will be about 3 feet above the keg and I'm aiming for light carbonation through priming sugar.

Questions:
1) When I connect the coupler to the keg, will any pressure be released if the line in and line out aren't connected to anything?

2) Does the gas line in on the coupler need to be pressurised to flow in or will it draw in once the external pressure is greater than the internal pressure (ie vacuum)?

3) The ale engine is without a check valve, so once I pull the first pint, will the internal pressure force a pint or three through the tap until it's more or less at equilibrium with atmosphere?

Many thanks in advance!
