Troegs Blizzard of Hops Winter IPA
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:02:31 pm »
I saw this for the first time today at the grocery store. Of course I'm going to buy it! Wow!

It's very light in color almost straw like but NOT a white IPA. It's listed at 6.4% and 80 IBU. It's not wet hopped, but I'm guessing that it's fresh hopped much like Celebration. The label talks about a blizzard of hops celebrates a great hop season yada yada yada. It's hopped with Centennial, Chinook, and El Dorado in the kettle and dry hopped with Chinook and Galaxy. This combo works! There is a touch of grassiness and hop spice. I thought for sure there was Mt Hood in it (It's in Troegs Perpetual IPA) but there's not. It might be the chinook bouncing off the El Dorado.

I highly recommend trying this out for something different for the holidays!

Pretty sure I would buy it. I just wish it was easier to find around here.

I would happily trade you the availability of Troegs here for the availability of 3 Floyds  :P

I love Troeg's! I think they are as good as any other brewery in the nation. They don't make a bad beer!

I like Troegs, but I could do without it and be fine. Just as long as I land a 6 of Nugget Nectar when it comes out in Februaries.

I think Nugget Nectar is the only one of theirs I've had. Loved it though.

I do without it for years at a time and am fine.

Yeah, you typed this before I posted. They are very solid across the board. I'm not a fan of Mad Elf and I wish they had a better stout.

There's clone recipe in one of the Zumurgy Mags. I brewed it but I diffetentiated by doubling all of the hops. It was dandy. It was probably the fastest kicked keg that I've had on tap.

I haven't had Mad Elf so can't comment on that. I actually haven't had any of their beers in a few years. But when I am in PA I always pick up a case of three. It's my hometown brewery so there is probably some sentimental love going on here. ;)

If I can find this up my way while it's still fresh I might have to pick one up. I'll join in the Troegs lovefest while I'm at it. Troegenator is one of the best US doppelbocks I've had.

No harm in that at all. Troegs and Victory were two of the first craft breweries that I enjoyed.

Mad Elf is about 11.5% ABV. Aside from Great Lakes Xmas Ale, it's probably the most popular around here. Amateurs love it because of the high ABV. I can enjoy a four ounce pour. It taste like boozie cherry caugh syrup to me.

Gotta keep some love for your local breweries. There are getting to be some excellent local breweries in Indy and, along with my LHBS, I like to start locally first. I love the feeling of bringing home a locally filled growler or two for a Colts game (or whatever). Feels right.

All good except that colts part . We expect victory when the colts come to town in December, where I will also partake in local tradition sipping my Great Lakes of choice!
