English brews
« on: January 22, 2015, 09:12:08 pm »
So a buddy of mine just came back from a trip to England. He brought me back 3 souvenirs.

London Pride is a great Ale, the other two I didn't know. The Porter is a store brand. Sainsburys is a grocery store chain and apparently have some brews that they brand. The interesting one to me is the Caesar Augustus. It's a Lager/IPA hybrid.

Can't wait to try these!

The Ceasar Augustus is a nice beer. It's also available widely through one of the big grocery retailers....so not that hard to find.
IIRC it is fermented cool and clean like a lager would be, but it has a healthy dose of hop character.....dry hoppy finish and it uses one of my all time favourite hops - Nelson Sauvin.
You'll enjoy it I'm sure.

The porter is a 'super market own label' ........contract brewed by Shepherd Neme.

If the Pride is fresh, find one on a store shelf near you, then compare the two. Fresh is best for that beer. Better yet on cask!

I remember buying generic store-brand beer in small cans labeled "Barley Wine" when I was there several years ago.  It wasn't bad.

Not a fan of the Caesar August. But I kinda expected that since I'm over IPAs. That much Hops in a Lager just tastes WRONG!

Feel like I'm drinking grapefruit with some beer in it.

Perhaps a different blend of hops would work for you in a lager, or an IPA: the four Cs are not the only hops that can be used in these beers.

Maybe, or perhaps I like malts more than hops. :D

I don't dare buy bottles of Pride. It is sooo good on cask, I know an old bottle will just make me sad.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

I have spent a good deal of time in the UK - particularly around Sheffield. It is so hard to buy imported British beers as they seldom are as good as the cask or even the gassed fresh beers in the area. Cask is really superior if you find a really good pub with a decent publican. I have had a few foamy cardboard/vinegar beers and angry bar maids when I send them back.

Fullers, Theakston's or even some of the Guinness products are just not in prime shape by the time they show up here in the US. Still, the memories they can trigger are precious!
