How much hops?
« on: November 08, 2014, 06:52:56 am »
I'm doing a 5 gal batch of SWEET Stout and I prefer malt forward (less bitterness) than most people would.

My OG is 1.045 and I'm planning on using  1 oz. of cascade for 60 minutes.  According to my calculations this should provide 22.5 IBUs. which I think would be appropriate for Sweet stout and my tastebuds.

Comments please.
It's easier to read brewing books and get information from the forum than to sacrifice virgins to appease the brewing gods when bad beer happens!

Style guidelines are IIRC 20-40 for sweet stout. I shoot for 30 or a little over to have a little better balance. It'll still be sweet stout, just not AS sweet. I don't normally use Cascade for bittering but for an IBU addition this small it'd be fine. Good luck !

+1 I like to bitter my stouts with nugget. IMO nugget meshes very well with a malt forward beer.

+1 for nugget in stouts. clean, high alpha, and practically useless inside of 30 minutes.

Several years ago I brewed a sweet stout with 30 IBUs of cascade just to see how it would work: it worked very well, better than I expected.
