Joe’s Tripel and pink grapefruit
« on: January 05, 2015, 01:12:25 pm »
Joe's Tripel, recipe at http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/homebrew-recipe/joes-tripel/.

I've brewed quiet a few tripels and it's my favorite style to brew/drink, but I've never heard of using pink grapefruit as part of the recipe. Granted, I have a disgust for normal grapefruit, so I've tended to shy away from all kinds of grapefruit.

Does pink grapefruit taste different than normal grapefruit and what flavors would be gained by adding pink grapefruit in the manner described in the above recipe. I'm always open to trying new brew ideas, but I'm completely at a loss when trying to figure out how Joe's Tripel would taste with the pink grapefruit added.

Also, what does adding the brown sugar into the primary accomplish rather than adding during the boil?

Thanks

Maybe just go with adding some grapefruit zest at the end of the boil or post fermentation?
On Tap/Bottled: IPL, Adjunct Vienna, Golden Stout, Honey Lager
Fermenting: IPA
Up Next: mexi lager, Germerican pale ale

As always, be sure to let people know if you put grapefruit in it. Many people, like me, can't eat grapefruit due to the medications we take.

Pink grapefruit is generally sweeter than yellow grapefruit.  I haven't noticed any other differences between pink and yellow grapefruit.

I think Joe is trying to preserve more of the brown sugar and the grapefruit flavors by adding in primary vs in the boil, but I'm not sure why the honey is boiled then.
