hopfen,
Yes, you are right.  I was thinking heat conduction in metals not heat transfer.
Many of us would be on a strict liquid diet if it weren't for pretzels.

Lots of area on those. Let us know how much it speeds the chilling.

sure will. here's what they report: "This chiller is faster than most plate chillers and will chill a 5 gallon batch from boiling to 68 degrees in just 3 minutes using only 18 gallons of 58 degree tap water."

needed to replace mine anyway, so new toy to try out.

I get a similar discoloration/buildup in my kettle, around the welded fittings and on the bottom, where the kettle rests on the burner.

Basically - I get stuck-on deposits (and perhaps a bit of rust) where the stainless is not completely smooth (like the weld line on your IC tubes).

I wash with PBW after every brew to remove trub, hop matter, etc. Every once in awhile, I'll also run a wash of Barkeeper's Friend (primarily Oxalic Acid) to keep the surface shiny and free of deposits/discoloration.

A quick soak in Barkeeper's Friend, coupled with a little elbow grease, should take care of it.

NOTE: make sure to use the Bleach-Free Barkeeper's Friend

Ken - That thing is insane. You need to run it straight away and report back. Cancel any plans for Friday.

yes looking forward to trying it out. and my well at 380Ft puts out 52F water all day long...6F cooler than water used in the test. imagine putting this in conjunction with pump and ice recirculation.

Ken,
Let me know. Jaded replied back and told me that it cools in 5 minutes! I may have to upgrade to that one.

Will do. It's on the way.   If I can drop from boiling to 60 in about 6-7 minutes I will be pretty satisfied. And if I do better than that....all the better.

Those cooling times combined with a larger kettle really make me want to jump on one as well. Did you go through their link for evaluating your system to get the right chiller for you or just pick one. Just wondering what they base their suggestions on. I know Web site talks about kettle dimensions, length of water supply line, ground water temp, etc. Just wondering what differences the different styles offer and how they help you decide which is best...

Conditioning: Nothing (UGH!)
In keg: Nothing (Double UGH!)
In the works:  House IPA, Dark Mild, Ballantine Ale clone(still trying to work this one into the schedule)

I did check out the specs and review for batch size. The other link I posted from Marshall - brulosopher shows 10 gal and 5 gal tests. The coil height is 9.5" I think and 12" diameter. Will fit most kettles. They also offer custom sizing.

So should we expect cooling reports within the hour?
