what are cold crash and whirlpool?
« on: January 20, 2015, 01:32:00 pm »
Two terms that this newbie keeps reading in this forum are cold crash (in yeast starter discussions) and whirlpool in wort topics.  Can someone explain them.  Or is there a glossary at AHA (that I can't seem to find)?
Many of us would be on a strict liquid diet if it weren't for pretzels.

Whirlpool
http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/how-to-brew/whirlpooling-makes-a-world-of-difference/

Cold crash is dropping the temperature to near or just above freezing to get yeast to settle out, leaving "beer" on the top that can be decanted in the case of a yeast starter or transferred to another vessel for a fermenting beer.

The AHA does have a dictionary of brewing terms in the Homebrewopedia wiki: http://wiki.homebrewersassociation.org/.

I just checked and neither of those two terms are posted there as of yet.  It's a wiki so anyone can add terms to the list if you see something that is missing.

Isn't a whirlpool what you do to get your hot dogs to floc out of your mash liquor?
