Never used rice hulls, but it has crossed my mind recently

Make sure you soak them first or they'll add to your grain absorption loss.
This will also help take the dirt off.

I thought the ones we use were washed. Might have to test that some day.
Not the pound I got from one LHBS. Water turned lake brown. I recirculated a little extra that batch.

I have seen pros put them right in the mash, half a 50 lb bag at a time. Will look into the ones I keep on hand, and do a water test.

I've had ones needing rinsing and those that didn't....luck of the draw. I don't use them any more...so probably  throw them out I guess.

Didn't know if you were planning a new technique of running whole cones through a mill. I imagine you would be hoping for better utilization.

I remember reading about a Deschutes beer that had hops added to the grist before milling. Seemed a bit silly to me and I don't remember which beer it was.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

I was permanently mounting my 1/2" drill to my mill.  I took the MM-3 off the base to reverse its position on the base.  I checked my gap and it had moved on one end, even though the thumb screw was tight.  Guess I need to check the gap more often.  I gapped it at .035.  I did put a mark at .030 so I could just set it.  I bought a router speed controller from H Freight for $20.  I now have a variable speed on my drill that was 450 rpm.  I slowed it to about half speed and the crush was much better.  Not as much flour and the husks were more intact.  Gap and speed are both important.

I think it will work as long as the drill is strong enough.  My drill is an old 70's monster.  I know the rheostat will cut its power output, but for mine it didn't act as if it bogged it at all.  I figured it was way cheaper than buying a motor and gear reducer.  Being hands free is great.  My hopper holds about 30# of grain.  Hard to load grain and hold a drill too.
