Starter Timing
« on: January 16, 2015, 03:23:00 pm »
I'm planning on brewing Sunday (first all grain, 5 gallon pale ale, WLP001) and I've completely forgot to start a yeast starter. Too late?

I can also pitch Monday afternoon at some point and put off pitching Sunday PM if it make a difference w. the starter.

No, you are not too late.   If you make the starter sometime between tonight and tomorrow morning, you can cold crash it late Tomorrow evening or Sunday morning (depending on when you start it).

Yeah, we just discussed this in another thread.  Was it the stir plate RPM thread?

+1. Recently did this with great results.  FL: Have you used liquid yeast before?  If not, what kind do you have?

Yeah, I've used liquid before...this is WLP001.

Thanks for the quick responses! Sneak preview of my yeast starter friend..

Ok, just checking.  The first time I used a White Labs vial I shook it like hell right before opening it.  Big mistake!

Does this look ready to cold crash tonight? Didn't see a huge head of foam, but it looks like it may have peaked at some point based on the line on the glass. It was pitched about 22 hours ago.

Quick question on a starter that is crashing now. How long can you realistically keep a starter in the refrigerator crashing before you pitch? A week?
