Wyeast Yeast Starter
« on: February 05, 2015, 04:24:33 pm »
When making a yeast starter with a Wyeast smack pack...do I smack the pack as I would if using stand-alone? Or can I just go ahead and pout the bag into a starter mix without having to wait until the bag inflates?

Smack or no smack with a starter?

I try to smack and let it swell, but have often smacked and poured into my flask. I don't think it matters much either way, I just like to watch the bag swell and I find it is easier to mix-up and tear open when swollen.

So you just don't use the inner pouch?

The inner pouch is just nutrient, whether I smack or not I add nutrient to all my starters anyways.
