Starter Hot Break
« on: February 05, 2015, 06:01:46 pm »
Noticed tonight that my little starter mixture (5 oz. DME/ 2 quarts water) has very little hot break. Continued to boil for 10 minutes but didn't look like a big thick hot break I'm use to seeing when brewing.

It did boil up when I stirred though. Common for this little amount of DME?

I have never even noticed any hot break in my DME starters.

I get a good amount of break, but it often doesn't form the thick break foam on top. Instead I get the egg drop soup look similar to below.

The only time I saw a real hot break on a starter was when I boiled in my erlenmeyer flask... I'll never do that again.

I'm getting away from boiling in the flask too.  Without ferm cap it is simply hazardous and I really don't like adding unnecessary things to my beer (or starters).
