Best Vienna?
« on: February 09, 2015, 10:10:03 am »
Has anyone made an all-Vienna beer with Best Vienna?  I am thinking about purchasing a bag of Best Vienna to experiment with all-Vienna beers.  Twenty-five kilograms is a lot of malt; therefore, I want to purchase wisely.

have not, however its a great malt. used it in combination with light munich 70/30.

i will say  i've been using avangard light munich, and that to me is a slightly more kilned vienna at average of 5-6 lovi.

Avangard Pils is currently my pils malt of choice.  I also use Avangard 8L Light Caramel.  I wanted to purchase a bag of Avangard Vienna.  However, my LHBS does not stock it, and I have already cashed in my bulk malt special order chit for the month.

I believe that Eric was poking fun at my usage of the word chit.  The word chit as I used it  means "voucher."

I give a slight edge to Best Malz Vienna and Munich. I've used the Avangard Pils, Munich, and Vienna and I like them quite a bit especially the Pils. I've never done a side by side comparison, so take this opinion for what it's worth. I just think the Best Munich has a sweeter, malty flavor and the Vienna has a nicer grainy, nutty flavor.

I love Best Vienna and use it a lot. I have used it as 100% basemalt and it works well. I have 4 single malt (all best Vienna) and single hop IPAs fermenting right now.

That's pretty interesting. Never had an all Vienna IPA. I do love Vienna. Sounds great.

Yes, last year I made a SMaSH lager with Best Vienna and Northern Brewer. Used Wyeast 2124.  It was one of the best beers I've ever made.  Clean toasty malt character.  However, I've never used any other brand of Vienna, so I don't really have much point of comparison.

Yesterday I racked the all Vienna IPA brewed with all Bavara Mandarina. The taste was outstanding, of course the Bavaria Mandarina stole the show. I find Vienna makes a nice basemalt for IPAs, color is light orange, subtle hint of sweetness. once beer sits a few days and is carbed I'll post a picture.

Really like that hop! Have an APA with it on tap now, the wife likes it a lot.
