I would shoot for 1045 OG. You can use the lightest coLored DME with some caramel malt.
For a drinkable pale ale I like to move all the hops to 20 min or less and shoot for 20-25 IBU. That is below bitterness guildelines for a APA but it makes for great drink ability.
For a 5G recipe you might try
6# Pilsen LME
0.5# C60
American Ale yeast.
1 oz Amarillo @ 20
0.5 oz. Amarillo @ 0
0.5 oz Amarillo dry hop
You can up the total hops to 3oz for little more bitterness.
You can substitute Amarillo with Simcoe, Citra, Centennial, or many others.
