Really old grain?
« on: March 16, 2015, 10:59:08 am »
So about 15-16 months ago I went to brew a beer with some buddies across the Delaware in New Jersey. The homebrew shop there would only sell grain by the pound so I ended up with some excess Amber Malt, Caramel Malt, and Smoked Malt (I tried a smoked gourd Brown Ale... came out pretty poor haha). It's been sitting at room temperature in plastic baggies at my buddies house until now when he dropped it off.

Should I try to brew with it or is that asking for issues?

Plastic baggies can be an issue if there was condensation or moisture  ... otherwise you should be OK.

I would brew with them. If you notice any stale taste, let us know. I would be interested if stored grain that has been cracked would be fine or stale.

Cheers,

Cheers,
Milled grain has a reduced shelf life. I think Briess recommends 6 months on their pre-milled grain.
