RIP Ronnie James Dio
« on: May 17, 2010, 09:51:37 am »
This is weird.  For years, I've really liked the band Government Mule.  On Friday, my youngest brother told me that Gov't Mule sounds like a classic 70's band.  I hadn't really thought of them that way, but he was right.  I grew up in the seventies, so it makes sense that I'd like a 70's sounding band.

Here's where it gets weird- I was splitting firewood this weekend, listening to my MP3 player...........Gov't Mule comes on.  I thought of my brother's 70's thing and noticed that Gov't Mule sounds alot like Rainbow.  The more they played, the more they reminded me of Rainbow.  I haven't listened to, or thought about, Rainbow in forever.  Now, I wake up and find out that RJD has passed away- trippy.  RIP RJD.

I have to agree with Lars in that RJD projected such confidence and power. I was a huge RJD fan. He was a great influence on many in the rock world. He will be missed. RIP

I was shocked by this news yesterday, a world with Dio is going to be an unpleasant and sad place

Checking your grammar: did you mean "without"? or were you implying on where he is now? :o

You guys make me feel even older than I usually do!  I know the name but can't say I could tell you anything he'd ever done.

Denny - perhaps you've heard of a little band named Black Sabbath?  ;)

While I'm a Sabbath fan, I totally associate RJD with Rainbow.

...or just the band "Dio"!  Holy Diver?  C'mon!  He was a 70's-80's metal Icon.

I was sad to hear that he'd died.  He lived a fairly healthy life I think as well.  But I also heard he got stomach cancer because he ate mostly just meat throughout his life?  Don't know. Here's a website I go to daily that has a whole bunch of musicians talking about their memories of him and stuff: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/index.aspx?PageNum=1

Yeah, it's sad.  His music actually spanned generations.  He used to play at my high school dances in the late sixties and very early seventies (Ronnie Dio and the Elves) in upstate NY.  My daughter is into his metal stuff.
