6" or 12" kettle screen?
« on: April 24, 2015, 03:33:51 pm »
I see some HBSs sell the weldless spigot for converting a cooler into a mashtun and a 12" kettle screen and some offer a 6" kettle screen. Is the 12" better than the 6", the same?

I assume the 6" would get clogged easier with hop matter, trub, etc.

i would go as big as you can to fit your cooler, I have a 12 inch in my big square cooler for 5+ gallon batches and then a 6 inch for a 5 gallon cooler I use for my 2.5-3 gallon batches.

Yup, if you can fit the 12" go with that, more surface area to drain and less apt to get plugged up

If you can build one from CPVC or PVC do it. I've had nothing but problems with those tubes.
Cut slots in the plastic pipe, 3/8" apart with a hacksaw blade (perfect width), 1/3-1/2 thru. You don't have to glue any of the fittings as they fit tight enough for mashing. PM me if you'd like to see how I put mine together.
Or use a soft copper coil if you have a round cooler

I went with dishwasher supply line this time. pull the plastic tube out of the SS braid and use that. it's around 36 inches so I looped it and attached it with a vinyl T to the tube leaving the bulkhead.
