My wife found a couple of Man From UNCLE novels at the thrift store.  These are the perfect sized books to stave off in-flight boredom.  I can't wait to see what Yllya Kuryakin and Napoleon Solo are up against in the Vampire Affair.

I just read the Last American Vampire by the same author as Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Slayer.  It's not quite as good, but the history is solid.

Oh, do the books have to be about beer or food?

Most reviews indicated it was not for a homebrewer, but for a craft brewer. Many reviews also noted errors in equations. Which, as an engineer, would drive me batty. I mean, when you read a book with equations in it you're supposed to read the equations first and then the text (if the text at all), right?

If you guys are telling me it's worthwhile, I may just complete the elements series finally.

There were no Homebrew recipes, but how does that not make it of interest for homebrewers?

Any idea as to what equations were off, I may have questioned one or so. Off to Amazon to read some reviews.

Edit - the ones that said there were no Homebrew recipes remind of those complaining that Brewing Better Beer had no extract recipes.

Haha Jeff. I'll have to add it to my wish list for Alaska plane ride reading then!

I picked up Modern Homebrew Recipes and a Michael Pollan book, Omnivore's Dilemma.

Mr Mallett is someone I always like to talk to a little at an event. Larry Bell says he is the smartest guy he knows. I have heard that he consulted a fair amount with Sierra Nevada on the NC brewery. It was his first book, so the learning curve was there. How many authors have no errata page these days?

Edit - then again Mitch Steele got a lot of flack from homebrewers due to the recipes in the IPA book being so general that they could be used by homebrewers and commercial. One had to do some conversions, but if you know what you are doing - excellent beer results.

Michael Pollan book, Omnivore's Dilemma.

You'll love it, I promise.

In that vein, have you read Ambitious Brew by Maureen Ogle? Not a brewing book per se but really entertaining and thought-provoking.

I'm very much enjoying the beginning Kindle preview I got for buying it.

I have read some of Maureen's writings, and enjoyed them, but have not read Ambitious Brew yet. That is right up my alley. Very good suggestion.

Funny, I almost mentioned Michael Pollan's books. Omnivore' s dilemma very much influenced how I eat, cook, and source my food.
Don't let the bastards cheer you up.

You probably have read it already, but Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher should be a required read for any home brewer or craft beer fan.

With the exception of the first 2 chapters, Modern Homebrew Recipes is going to be more of a reference book than a cover to cover reader.  I received mine last weekend (preordered with Amazon).  I've gotten through part of it and it appears it is going to be an excellent resource (there may have a lot of similar beers in the up-coming comps).

My favorite book that has been recently published is the American Sour Beers by Michael Tonsmiere.  You may already have it. It is well written and very informative.  Easily the best of the recent Brewer Publication books of late.  If you don't already have it I highly recommend.

Oh yeah - I have both of those. Picked up Tasting Beer when I was studying for the BJCP exam and got American Sour Beers last year. I do have to agree, American Sour Beers is one of the best books in the BP library. Although I am a little biased - the only beers I can seem to advance to NHC Finals are my funky beers!  ;)

I already have just about every book from Brewers Publications outside of Malt, but I do not intend to buy that.

I need to know if this stance changed after the man himself gave you a ride to the airport?!?   ;D

It changed when Jeff (and others) gave the recommendation. It doubly changed when I got to talk to John himself. ;)

A ride from Mr. Mallett! He is really interesting to talk to, approachable, and Larry Bell calls him the smartest guy he knows. Now you probably wish the airport was farther, no?

I actually (almost) wish I hadn't drank so much mead the night before so I could have asked more intelligent questions. We did talk about oxidation signs in lighter malt though.
