dry hop pellicle
« on: June 30, 2015, 02:40:15 pm »
I have noticed that when ever I dry hop a pellicle forms atop the beer in the secondary. Is this normal? Is it an infection? I don't notice any off flavors or funk.

If a pellicle forms it's from a new microorganism hitching a ride on the hops or something that was already in the beer that shows up after you open the fermentor and introduce oxygen.

Is it a pellicle or is it just a layer of hop oils floating on the surface?

Exactly...is there a "whitish" sheen to it or does it just look like a thin oil layer on top?

Pellicle is not normal!

If this happens to just your dry hopped beers, the most likely culprit would be your hop bag if you use one.

I agree, assuming what he's seeing really is a pellicle. Since none of these beers showed any off flavor/aroma, I'm leaning toward hop oils on the surface (though obviously hop forward beers can make it harder to notice off character). OP - can you post a pic ?
