Pepper Extravaganza - 4th annual - August 22
« on: July 15, 2015, 06:25:49 pm »
The 4th(ish) annual Pepper Extravaganza (http://reggiebeer.com/PepperExtravaganza.htm) homebrew competition opens for registration today.  If you have a chile pepper (or other pepper) beer that you want to enter, now’s the time!  This has typically been a smallish competition – so chances for medals are better than average.  Entry window is July 15 through August 14, and the competition will be held on August 22.

Also, feel free to transfer 30-40 ounces of your beer to a 1.5 or 2 liter soda bottle, then add your pepper (or peppers) – dried, fresh, smoked, or whatever – for infusion.  Then carbonate it, and send in two bottles as your entry.

Here are the rules:
1)  Enter your beer in the appropriate BASE style of the BJCP 2015
guidelines (for example, enter that Habanero Kolsch as a Kolsch, not
Spice/Herb/Vegetable).  This competition accepts all BJCP 2015 substyles
including beers, meads, and ciders.
2)  Specify the variety (or varieties) of pepper that you have in your beer.
3)  Go to ReggieBeer.com and scroll down to the list of upcoming
competitions – click on the Pepper Extravaganza link.
4)  There are no substyle limits – but each entry in a substyle should be a
different pepper variety (so you can enter three Kolsches – one Serrano, one
Habanero, and one Poblano, but you can’t enter two Kolsches that are both
Serrano).
5)  Entry cost is $7 per entry, and 2 bottles (unmarked, 12oz, crown cap)
are required.
6)  Drop off your entries at Quirky or Brew Hut, or ship to WhatsOnTapAt
(details online when you register your entries).
7)  Medals will be given in the following categories:
Mild/Light Beer, Light-to-moderate pepper heat (Scoville<=5000 - no more
than a Jalepeño)
Amber Beer, Light-to-moderate pepper heat
Dark Beer, Light-to-moderate pepper heat
Mead/Cider, Light-to-moderate pepper heat
Mild/Light Beer, Moderate-and-higher pepper heat (Scoville>5000 - hotter
than a Jalepeño)
Amber Beer, Moderate-and-higher pepper heat
Dark Beer, Moderate-and-higher pepper heat
Mead/Cider, Moderate-and-higher pepper heat
The best of each of these categories will be judged to award the Best Of
Show.
8)  Beer must be homebrew.  This means that you must ferment it on your
homebrew system (but allows you to get pre-fermented wort from any source).
