Brown IPA / Noti Brown?
« on: August 05, 2015, 04:56:07 pm »
The club I belong to set up a competition, where they draw a beer style out of a hat and that's what you have to brew. I wound up with "Brown IPA" which has me scratching my head.
The only brown I have brewed that is any good is Denny's Noti Brown.
In beersmith it hits all the numbers for brown ipa except the color is a few srm's to dark.
Any opinions on if this would score well as a brown ipa? Or if anyone has a good recipe they would like to share that would be cool.

I love Janet's Brown Ale out of 'Brewing Classic Styles'. I've tinkered with it a little but as is, it's a great American Brown. But kick up the late and dry hops and I think it'll be what you're looking for. I did that last fall with (IIRC) Centennial and Mosaic hops late and dry, and it was excellent.

EDIT - Noti would work great as a base too, though.

I love Janet's brown, but I like Noti brown better!

Since there is no "official" brown IPA style (is there?), it's hard to say.

So is Janet's Brown the same as Russian River's Janet's Brown? I have heard of this beer a lot but have never heard it associated with Russian River. It is listed as a commercial example of a 'brown IPA'....

I'm sure they had to make some changes for the commercial system, but I imagine they'd be pretty close.

FWIW, Noti is a great recipe too, Denny! Hard to beat those two.

Take your best IPA recipe and add four ounces of midnight wheat malt just before you sparge.

Can't remember the reasons, but Tasty brewed it at Russian River, and it has become one that is often on the board at the pub. So the same, and as Sean said, what ever was changed for a production batch.

We narrowed it down to two recipes and flipped a coin and wound up brewing the
"Big Brown Ale" https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/homebrew-recipe/big-brown-ale/.
I'll let you know how it turns out and how we do in the competition. We are up against two really good brewers.
