Viable yeast in Vegemite?
« on: August 11, 2015, 02:58:28 pm »
So according to the Australian Indigenous Affairs minister, there's viable yeast in Vegemite because it's being used in moonshine. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-33839742

For a truly authentic Aussie Sparking Ale, pitch how many tbsp of Vegemite per plato?  :o

I've been trying to figure out what they are using the Vegemite for. It seemed like the articles were being purposely vague. I can't imagine it is for the yeast because the articles are talking about large purchases and yeast is easy to grow

First they came for the Vegemite and I didn't say anything ...

Just like a government to blame the product and not the underlying causes.   ::)

You can make sangria in the toilet.  Course, it's shank or be shanked.

I wonder if it's possible to distill out the nastiness. Vegemite is the most vile stuff I've ever tried (although I have yet to try durian or lutefisk, so there is room for it to be knocked from it's perch).

I tried durian once at 9:00 in the morning with a hangover. It didn't go well...

Vegamite is autolyzed yeast extract.

I think he was making a joke. That is one of the best bits from Lucy. She got so tanked. I also remember a bit from Mama's Family with vanilla extract getting everybody tossed.

My wife keeps Marmite around. I may toss some in my last runnings some time and see what happens. I imagine it will be nasty if it's autolyzed.
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.

I ate durian in Kuala Lumpur once. I bought it on the street and the building right in front of it had a sign on the door with a durian crossed out in red. They were not allowed in the building.
