Finally Made It...
« on: October 24, 2015, 03:41:25 AM »
Hey all, my name is Ken I'm from NW Indiana. I have been brewing since 09, I have been a serious all grain brewer for the past several years. I have been around other brewing forums that have kind of dried up and I'm looking for something new. I have ended up here many times after doing internet searches and such. Seems there is a lot of great people with lots of knowlege to share. I can't wait to look around a bit. I feel bad to admit I haven't joined sooner. I love this hobby and I appreciate what the AHA does for it so finally I am here thanks to the membership my wife gifed me. And last I don't have a photobucket account or anything but I'll try to come back with a pic or two. Cheers.

I'll start off with a few of the questions form the bio thread:

I've been a homebrewer since: 2009

What is your favorite style(s) to brew? I am all over the place but I really enjoy the English Styles. I love brewing a good Porter, Stout, Ordinary Bitter and Scottish Ales.

What style(s) will you never brew? Can't say never, but I am not much of a fan of Belgian Styles.

What was the first beer you ever brewed?  My first batch was a straight up hopped extract batch. It wasn't great but it was beer.

What is your favorite beer recipe? I have a few recipes I can come to bring to my liking over the years but my favorite is probably a Chocolate Coffee Porter I brew for my wife.

Do you have a favorite homebrew trick or gadget that you've found to make your beer better/brewing easier, etc? I like to brew early in the morning on a Sunday or a week day before work. What I'll do is set myself up the night before. I'll clean up my brew area, I'll measure out my water and have my kettle on the burner to fire up first thing in the morning. Next to that, I couldn't brew without my temperature controlled fermentation freezer.

Describe your brew system. I keep it pretty simple. I built myself a brewing rig. It's a 4 wheel cart where the top is a work space to hold my mashtun and gadgets for brewing, my burner is on the side and I have storage and my propane tank underneath. I brew 6 gal batches and keg my beer. I really enjoy recipe forumlation, the ins and outs and the science of brewing. I modify my water, I check mash ph, run all the numbers etc.

How frequently do you brew (times/month or /year)? Lately at least once a month. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

How many medals have you won from homebrew competitions? To date I have about about 10 medals from regular brewing competitions.

Do you brew alone, with friends or with someone you live with? I tend to brew on my own, early on a Sunday morning before the wife and kids get up. It's a time for me without taking away from family time.

Are you an indoor or outdoor brewer? Out in the garage baby.

List some of the names you've given your beers. Which is your favorite?I usually put a name to every beer I brew. One of my favorites is the name my wife gave the Chocolate Coffee Porter I mentioned above. She deemed that beer "Tig O' Bitties".

Ken, welcome to the forum.  There is nothing wrong with not liking Belgium beer styles.  I too am not a huge Belgian beer fan.

I should clarify. I'm really a Trappist beer fan. I stray to a few Abbey beers as well and I like Achouffe and the Gouden Carolus beers too.

All the Gouze and Oud Bruin and Flanders really isn't my thing.
