purging with CO2 bottle
« on: November 10, 2015, 02:29:48 am »
This CO2 question is so stupid I would be afraid to ask it if I had any shame. OK, so here it goes: I now have my CO2 bottle, my kegs, my quick disconnects an my faucets. All under control. But how do I use the CO2 bottle to purge bottles and fermentors?

I use one of these.

I have Kent disconnects on my lines so I can swap out accessories.

Completely, totally, absolutely, wholly, and utterly lost on all counts to the max.

Hook up your CO2 to a line with no disconnect on the end.  Stick the line down inside your fermenter as far as it will go.  Turn on the CO2.

I use these - http://www.bargainfittings.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=51_66

Both regulators have a short tube with a female disconnect. I also have a 5 foot hose with male/female. I then have 1 foot lengths with a ball lock fitting, air gun/nozzle, and just plan tubing.

Same thing I've done in the past.

You could also have a spare keg filled with co2 and use a bottle wand stuck in a picnic tap to purge bottles.

I just have a spare bottle for purging and carbing kegs in the lagering chest.

A hose. Soak it in sanitizer first.  I don't purge anything that hasn't been fined or cold crashed.  Purging kegs is worth it.

I purge kegs occasionally such as for a beer I want to preserve the super hoppy character, but I don't bother most of the time.  I do purge the headspace immediately after filling and putting the lid on the keg, after racking the beer from the fermenter to the keg.

I just remove the QD, run a paper towel dipped in Star San up and down the gas hose and fitting, and put it down into the keg.

I've never purged beer bottles, but I do use o2 scouring bottle caps.
