using large ferm chamber freezer as keezer ??
« on: December 01, 2015, 05:00:30 pm »
Hi

I curently have a large chest freezer that I use with temp controller to ferment..
Im just geting into kegging and have everything besides an extra Chest freezer

Im going to get one soon.. BUT INCASE I dont, since it would be nice just to have one piece of equipment rather than 2 chest freezers..... 1 ferm. 1 keezer

Can I use it as a "Keezer" when not fermenting beer?... I know sounds like a lame simple question...But im asking because I don't want to build a 2x collar and do all the work if  by adding the collar/ increasing interior volume will cause issues down the road with temp control or causing strain on the freezer somehow. Also i know I wont be able to ferment while i have serviceable beer at 42F... till the beer is gone... right..

Do you guys just pull the kegs out full or empty and ferment new wort  then once completely done.. put kegs back and drop freezer back to serving temp...???

Not suggesting partitioning the freezer, as the freezer I have now is pretty big still fairly new...
Easily hold 2 to 3 kegs and 2 fermenters (30L speidels)

Do you beer makers have 2 separate pieces of equipment or use one for all???

I have separate freezers for this.  I want beer on tap now, not later.

Yep, if you think about it, it only makes sense.  You don't want to wait for a beer to ferment, condition, chill and carb all while going thirsty.  Dehydration is very real health concern after all!
At any rate, settle on a good size keezer for your kegerator.  Whatever floats your boat there.  For fermentation chambers I like the small chest freezers, they only hold 1 carboy.  They're cheap enough that I bought two and can have ales/lagers going at different temps.  Cheers!

I used to do this all in one, it worked fine but I ended up eventually purchasing a second chest freezer to use for fermenting, conditioning, and lagering.

Or a chest freezer with a collar then a stand up for a kegerator.  That is what works best for the space I want to devote to the craft
