rice hulls conversion cups to ounces?
« on: December 06, 2015, 04:26:29 pm »
hey guys, so I'm about to brew my first hefeweizen (4 gallons: 3.5lbs german pils, 4 lbs german malted wheat)

since malted barley is ~5% hulls by weight, I wanted to add 3-4 ounces of rice hulls to make up for the lack of hulls in the wheat.

unfortunately I don't have a scale, only measuring cups. Does anyone know roughly the cups to ounces equivalence for rice hulls? Thanks!

SWAG - 1 cup ~ 2.5-3 ounces

Pound of hulls is about a quart and a half if I recall correctly. So 16 ounces by weight = 6 cups by volume

Using more than needed shouldn't hurt anything as well.

I have a lot of rice hulls, so I weighed a quart.  It was about 4 ounces, so an ounce a cup.

Wow, I was pretty far off. Last time I bought hulls it was a pound and took up about half of a lunch sack. Maybe the shop compressed them before taping shut.

I think it's better to measure by volume.  Usually people include a "quart" of rice hulls in a recipe.  The weight can vary so much do to compaction.

depending on your lauter system....shouldn't need more than a handful or two with that grist. i can do 65% wheat and only use 1 handful ( probably fills 16oz cup).
