English Pale Hops Question
« on: December 17, 2015, 09:33:47 pm »
I recently made an English Pale

95% Maris Otter
4% Crystal 60
1% Chocolate Malt

20 IBU Brewers Gold @60
10 IBU Fuggles @15
Wlp002 yeast

The beer was great.

I have question before brewing this beer again. I have enough leftover ingredients to make this again, but, I was thinking about flipping the hops.

20 IBU Fuggles @60
10 IBU Brewers Gold @15

I have no experience with Brewers Gold flavor. Would it be alright for a flavor addition? I know it's normally used for bittering.

PS. Those were the only 2 English hops I found at the LHBS. I went the weekend after thanksgiving and they were out of everything.

You won't know if you like it until you brew it and taste it.

Timothy Taylor Landlord uses Brewers Gold late, and is a favorite of mine.

Edited for a brain fart. Yeah TTL uses Styrian Goldings. Brewers Gold was used in the old Ballantine IPA, but not sure if it is used today. It was bred in England, so it should go well in English beers.

Huh. Not styrian goldings? Everything I have read says Styrain Goldings late in TTL.

Thanks for the wisdom. I was wondering what other people think of Brewers Gold flavor in an English pale.

See my correction. Hardly wisdom on that comment.

Thanks. I do plan to try it. I am enjoying the Fuggles version but wanted to try something different without going back to the LHBS.

Try it, I think you'll like it.  I brewed an English IPA (read not West Coast, in-your-face, uber-IPA) with all Brewers Gold and really enjoyed it.
