Old model bev air bm-23 kegerator for sale: advice needed
« on: December 20, 2015, 10:39:49 am »
Had a chance to look at this unit this morning:
https://rochester.craigslist.org/app/5347137155.html

The seller, who seems slightly clueless about the unit, says he has had the unit for a few years and hasn't used it since 2013. Apparently it was owned by Genesee and he claims the co2 tank and beverage lines were "new" when he used it in 2013. He didn't realize he had the thermostat set on 1 instead of 7 (coldest). As a result the bucket of water was only 45f. I turned the knob as far as it would go and the compressor kicked on. I hope to test the temp again tomorrow. Obviously a deal breaker if it doesn't cool lower.

As for the rest of the unit, is in pretty solid shape structurally. The tower fan ran the entire time and wasn't super loud. It needs a good cleaning, is missing a thermometer, drip tray tube/collection vessel, and there isn't a functioning light, which I'm not positive these older models had to begin with.

The door seal looked ok but slightly damaged at one of the corners. It may need to be replaced. The regulator is pretty knicked up and will almost certainly need to be replaced, as will the beverage line and likely the co2 tank.

The seller has not ever done a refrigerant re-charge and doesn't know if one has been done. It uses r-12 refrigerant, which while not ideal, I've read isn't a major issue.

I also noticed that it did have a blow hose for the air cooled tower, but it looked pretty nasty/possibly moldy.

If I go tomorrow and it is <<38f (I assume that 5 gallons of water should be somewhat frozen at the coldest setting), I plan to make an offer. In light of what I stated above, do you think a starting offer of $200 is offensive for a unit listed at $400? I will not spend more than $300 and I will likely need to pump a few hundred more dollars into it in the near future.

Personally, I'd pass on it.  I'd certainly not pay more than $100 given the damage and the fact that it needs work. By comparison, one of my kegerators is a 'low end' model that has lasted for years, self-defrosts which is great, and gets very cold. In fact I have to set the thermostat most of the way down to keep the beer from being colder than I like. All I've done is replace the single tower/cheap faucet with a multi tap tower with Perlick faucets. I consider it a steal @ $400 :

Well before I even had a chance to verify the temp after readjusting the thermostat he texted me and told me the price was absolutely firm. Kind of annoying since the post never stated that and I already expressed the above to him today. Either way not going to happen. I've been on the lookout for a nice bev air given their reputation but I'm not overpaying for a total wildcard that clearly wasn't well cared for. I wouldn't pay $15000 for a mediocre Old BMW just for the name and won't do that for this bev air

Haha well played.  Price firm'd is right. Dude has no idea what he's selling. Worst part is he's loaded ( lives near a super high end golf course) so he's literally just trying to make $$ off of some sucker

Have you had and issues with foaming due to temp changes with the automatic defrost cycle? Did you happen to install a tower fan to chill the tower and prevent first beer foam? Such as this:http://www.kegkits.com/kegerator5.htm can you link me to the dual tower/perlick  you purchased? Were they easy to install or did you need to drill new holes due to diameter differences between the old and new tower?

These are all concerns I've had that have prevented me from going for one of these lower end models. We have a costco nearby now so I may investigate further

I've noticed no issues at all with the auto defrost in terms of foaming. Being smaller than a full size fridge, the cycle evidently happens quickly enough to not cause issues. My beer is consistently cold. I do use a tower cooling fan on both my kegerators, as foaming on the first pint is an issue with towers. I did drill out for the new tower I installed as it is a 3" tower, ie., slightly bigger in diameter than the one that came with. I called the manufacturer of the kegerator first and they assured me that wires and coolant lines were not near the tower hole. Here's the link :

Thanks for the help. Despite the negatives about these units it seems you can make it work with some effort. Do you recall if it came with a 5 gallon or 2.5 gallon co2 tank? Did you replace the regulator with a dual gauge? Is the co2 tank external only for that unit? How many 1/6 or corneys does it comfortably fit?

Sorry to bombard you with questions I just want to know what I'm getting into prior to making the plunge!

No problem. It came with a 5 lb tank and dual regulator. It has a hole in the back that can be used to run the gas line to the tank externally which I prefer for maximizing space inside. It'll hold 2 cornies comfortably, 3 if need be, with the tank on the outside.

+1 to all hoosierbrew said.

I have this model for over two years without any problems.    I replaced the tower with these
http://www.amazon.com/Perlick-Wrap-Around-Draft-Beer-Faucet/dp/B000EH2RK0/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t
The holes lined up so replacing the tower was easy.  The original tower and tap were garbage, which I think a lot of the complaints are probably about.  Or maybe people are upset that their BMC still tastes terrible coming out of a keg.    I don’t have a fan set up for the tower, but eventually I will.   The foaming is not really too bad for the first pint.

Thanks guys I will definitely look into it.

Also have my eye on these units as well (a bit pricer, especially with shipping but the two tap in particular has forced air cooling, a digital display and the temp range all the way to 75f, so I can ferment in it if I want as well)
