Need an elbow fitting for blow off tube from fermenter
« on: December 22, 2015, 10:04:10 pm »
My new fermenter fits like a glove in my old chamber but there's almost no room up top so I'll need my blow off to come out at a 90degree angle. I have a 1.5" bung with a standard airlock-sized drill hole.  Any ideas what I could use?  The hose barb can be any size.

You should be able to find nylon barbed elbows, maybe even a stainless if you look hard enough.

I've used the elbow of a racking cane in a standard bung by cutting off the long part and attaching tubing. Worked fine for normal fermentation since it's about the same diameter as an airlock, but my have clogging problems with a lot of blow-off.

It's a really old Danby. It was my daughters when she was in college in the early 90's. Safe bet would be that the model is not available, but for what it's worth, the dimensions are 20"D x 19"W x 33"H.

The picture above was from around 2007. After that I hacked out some of the plastic and insulation in the hump so that it would fit a carboy with an airlock in front of the hump. You can see a little of my ugly work on the right of the carboy in this picture. I very carefully twisted the freezer element around and fastened it to the top.

Still using it today.

Nuts. Perfect solutions just don't exist. I am reluctant to modify the freezer in the same fashion on a new unit.

I'm currently leaning towards thermoelectric wine coolers, but they can't cold crash.

Thanks!

Go to the home improvement store and review the PEX fittings. I think you will find that the plastic 90 degree elbows are what you need.  I use a 1/2-inch version in my setup.

Steve, I made a two tap kegerator out of one of these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Danby-Designer-4.4-cu.ft.-All-Refrigerator/40487632
The cooling plate is mounted on the back wall.  The inside dims. are about 17" W x 27.5" H x 15" deep if you modify the door shelving.  The height from the top of the hump to the roof is 21".  The space in front of the hump is 10.5" deep (again, if you modify the door).

Many of us would be on a strict liquid diet if it weren't for pretzels.

That's one that I have looked at as well. $199 is more than I wanted to spend, but what can I do if my requirements push there.

Yeah, I think it was $189 when I ordered and WallyMart lost it in delivery for an extra 10 days. so they gave me a discount and I ended up paying $162.

Steve,
One more heads up.  The Danby All-Ref. gets warmish on the outside along the sides and across the top near the front.  I'm guessing that's where the condenser system is, so be careful if you drill holes in those areas.
