There was a lot of Best Pils contaminated with acidulated malt. That is what they said.

Where was this reported?

I had the same lot as a local pro. He contacted Country Malt, got the response.

Can you post the lot #?

I asked my friend if it is ok to post the response. Have not heard back yet.

Here is the lot number.
GWP0017523 XXXX 532301 P3.5" on the bag.  XXXX would be the sequential bag number from the packaging run.

Thanks.
That doesn't match my lot #.
I've been getting some erratic mash pH readings and was wondering.
If I do a mini mash as you've described, what should the pH value be under normal circumstances?

If you use Distilled water it should be about 5.8 for lightly kilned malt, like Pils malt.

For more complex malt bills I will make my water up from RO, and take a small of water to mash in with a small (100g?) sample of malt with the correct % of all the constituents from the recipe. Mill, mash in, check pH. Adjust the water according to the result.

Here is the gist of it with no names and such.

"It has come to our attention that a recent lot of Best Pils Malt is contaminated with Best Acidulated Malt.

We are contacting all customers that have received bags from the lot in question which is easily identified by "GWP0017523 XXXX 532301 P3.5" on the bag.  XXXX would be the sequential bag number from the packaging run.  Unfortunately, we are unsure of the extent of the problem and specifically which bags in the run have been compromised.  The product you received may be completely 100% Best Pils malt and just fine."

Did anyone have an issue with Avengard, in terms of lower pH than expected?  I just bought a sack and I guess a mini ash is in order - I'll probably just grind the grains the night befor and add in a little extra to take for the test.  My wife will think I am totally nuts with this one....

So 5.4 pH for Avengard - how does that translate to Lovibond for Brunwater?

Last weekend I did a pils and I adjusted it to 10 in software and ended  up almost right on vs projected.

Edit: I've only mini mash tested this sack of Avangard pils. I will be getting another in March and will be testing that also to see if it's consistent.

open up brunwater, put 1lb of pils at 2srm with 1.76qt distilled water and no salts. PH estimate is 5.69. change the srm to 10 and estimated PH is 5.46.....right where I came in on mini mash test.

That is very helpful to know!  Thanks.  I'm going to test my new sack of Avengard Pils tonight if I get a chance.
