Sierra Nevada bottles crack at the top of the neck with my hand capper quite often. Not sure if that's because of my capper or the bottles, but use caution.

Stone bottles are a royal PITA to get the labels off, BTW ;)

A Baking soda soak works pretty well. Then a scrubby sponge for any remaining glue..

Toss any screw tops or those with plastic labels

I think it is the capper not being setup for short neck bottles. The jaws squeeze too tight. I've been wanting to get a bench capper, but I bottle so infrequently that it's a poor investment.

Steve,
If you ever do buy a capper, look at the Colona.  It does every size bottle, cap, and also corks.  I love mine and have never had an issue.

I bought an old one for 20 bucks on eBay that works really well. Just pushes down no clamping but works great!

I borrowed a buddies and felt that it would break easily. Do you not feel that this is the case?

It's more durable than it looks. My fear with wearing down the plastic is the grooves where the metal shelf slides in to support the bottle. In order to cork Belgian or champagne style bottles one must remove the plate with each bottle. That's a lot of sliding the plate in and out. I will probably do as some other people and cut a wood block to use in place of the shelf with those bottles but I'm lazy and haven't gotten that far yet.

My wife happens to like Fever Tree tonic with her gin.  It comes in clear, 7.5 ounce bottles, so I soak the labels off to have mead bottles when needed.  Lately they haven't been soaking off as easily in oxy clean or ammonia.  What else do you guys use?
You can use clear and green bottles with beer, you just have to make sure that they stay in the dark.

Yes, that's why I use them for mead.

I pretty much just save the 11.2 oz. import bottles. I have tons of Chimay, Westmalle, Rochefort and Orval bottles.

I have capped I bet 200 cases of beer with it.  When I bought it I thought for sure it would break.  I've done corks and every size bottle.  I would buy it again in a second.  I don't bottle as much as before.  I like bottling 750ml with Euro caps, switch to 22oz bombers, then switch to shorty 12oz bottles.  Nothing not to like about the Colona IMO.

Are you using the Colona with Belgian bottles and corks?

Or just wine?

I've got a Colona corker/capper, and with one minor hiccup it's worked like a charm.

When I first started using it, the handle came out of the white plastic "end" that's toothed to drive the capping end downward. It just wasn't seated all the way, hammered it back in and I haven't had any troubles since. It's built like a tank.
Corn is a fine adjunct in beer.

And don't buy stale beer.

I've used it for wine.  I have 15 gallons of Saison that I'll be using Belgians on.  It will work great I'm sure
