Mystery Beer
« on: January 15, 2016, 07:48:44 pm »
Tonight I went to dinner with my wife to a restaurant with a fairly good beer selection. The waitress offered me a mystery beer for $1. Since they had like 10-15 taps with a lot of craft beer I rolled the dice.  I know it would be beer they wanted to get rid of. I got a holiday spiced ale. It was a little odd to be drinking a spiced beer on a warm night but it was not bad. I decided to roll the dice a second time. I got a light lager.

That's the first time I have ever experienced mystery beer.  I didn't get the best beers but I don't regret spending the $2 either.

Oh yeah, that's not a bad gimmick as far as gimmicks go.

Yeah, pretty cool gimmick. I guess you can't complain too much at $1 a pop. Unless I got the spiced Xmas ale.  ;)

I heard about this on NPR last night

"Yellowhammer Brewing and Earth and Stone Wood Fired Pizza took the coveted Downtown Huntsville, Inc. Project of the Year award"

Exactly. The only Xmas beer on the menu was Southern Tier 2XMAS. So, I guess I got 2X the spice for my $1

Yeah, and they make a beer or two I've liked. I just can't take much spice in a beer. I know the pumpkin beer guys would disagree. Honestly at a buck for even that beer it's hard to complain much.

Agreed. The last time I had dollar drafts it was Rolling Rock Light. Any non-Rauchbier would easily top that by a mile.

OK, thoughts on a brewery doing this in the Taphouse? Worth it or worth more?

First, if your considering it for business purposes you should know the servings were smaller; 10 oz pours I think. Served in a Dixie cup. I didn't care because it was $1.

The waitress told me its very popular with folks who have been drinking a while. They're just looking for alcohol. Her words.

I think it could be fun. I think you could get more than $1 for mystery beer fresh at the brewery.  I think half the normal pint glass charge still seems like a good deal.

You might charge regular price and give it too them free (or reduced price) if they can guess the tap.

Just my thoughts.

I got ripped off this weekend on stale flat Sam Adams Cold Snap for 6 bucks. I would have loved it for a dollar though  ::)
