Stupid keg transfer question
« on: March 01, 2016, 12:49:07 pm »
Ok this is really stupid: I'm fermenting for the first time in a keg, and tomorrow I want to transfer the beer off the yeast to another keg. But the line I want to use is full of starsan. So how do I get it out? Do I first need to transfer a bit of beer to a third keg?

how long is the line? you could not worry about it, you could use the end of a spoon or similar to depress the poppet in the QD and just spray the starsan in the sink and then connect the jumper to the destination keg.

Hook it up to a pressurized keg and push it out. If you don't want to take the fittings off you can press the valve on the inside of the post fitting.

How much starsan are you talking? If it's a small amount you can forget it. 1 foot of 3/16 is less than .1 ounces. Small potatoes in the grand scheme of a full keg.

The line is 70 cm long, 15 liters of beer.

"Depress the poppet in the QD or the valve on the inside of the post fitting connected to a  1 foot of 3/16 to release less than .1 ounces". Do you know how hard that is for a poor Belgian?  :( This is like Latin to me, except I know Latin...

I'm sorry if I don't understand the question.
Won't the first thing you pull be the yeast off the bottom of your keg?  If that mixes with starsan do you care?  Won't you be discarding it anyway?
Beer...Now there's a temporary solution!

No, I sawed off about an inch of the  dip tube. The yeast should remain in the first keg. I want to reuse it. But as I haven't done this before...

You will have to take me by the hand. Do I unscrew the top of the quick disconnect first?

No. Just push on the little pin on the inside while connected to a gas supply (empty keg with co2)
