My second year Centennials are growing nicely up twine attached to a light pole at my car repair shop in Tampa, but I am having trouble getting the pictures inserted.  Maybe someone can give me a hint as to how this works.

You need to have your pic posted somewhere that's web-accessible.  It looks like what you put between the IMG tags is only "http://" and then the name of the picture file.  If you upload the pic to some photo hosting website, then you'd put the full URL to the pic between the tags.  That is, instead of your "http://hop farm 6-24-10.jpg", you'd have something more like "http://photoshostingsite.com/hop farm 6-24-10.jpg"  (obviously, that's not a real site).

My first years are moving along slowly...is this to be expected.  I planted them May 12th, and as of yesterday they are only about 2 feet up the trellis.  I know the first year they build their root systems, but I was hoping for a little more by this time.

I'll try to post a picture when I get home tonight.

Finally remembered to take pictures.  Trying to RDWHAHB, but I wish they were higher by now.

Looking good. I wonder why some hops grow faster so much faster than others.

  They're treated equally; and actually the fuggles are a year older than the others. Not that you could tell from the pic but the Cent and Chinook are over the peak a good 2 feet, they branched out - I'm gonna end up with a 3C Jumbalaya beer assuming the top end produces for me. Had spider mites in the greenhouse last year - it sucked.

Looks like a permissions issue.  When I try to go to your link, I get the message "You are not allowed to view this picture!".  You need to host the pics somewhere that anyone is allowed to access.  You can probably see them because you have a user id on that site.

Just wondering what type of string you guys are using to go vertical from the base of the hop crown to the top of the trellis? Are you all using the same string?

Mine is a course rope from Lowes.

Just wondering what type of string you guys are using to go vertical from the base of the hop crown to the top of the trellis? Are you all using the same string?

I've just been using biodegradable bailing twine until I figure out a more permanent system.  The twine does get some slack after a rain but it is pretty easy to take it up by just wrapping a nail in the middle of it and taping it.

Some hops just grow better in certain regions than others.  My Goldings have always lagged behind all the others even after 3 years.  Cascades have been vigorous from year one.  Followed by Chinook, centennial, and then Willamette.  Actually the most vigorous growers I have are an unknown variety a friend found growing at an old farmstead.  They are beasts.  Sadly I can't say I am in love with their characteristics.

The ones on the left are Centennials.  They are doing very well in their second year.  The Sterlings not so well.
I'm using the official Indian hemp that the hop sellers use.  That's also in the second year.  They come in precut 20ft lengths.
