Flaked Oats and stuck sparges
« on: March 12, 2016, 10:22:32 am »
Planning on brewing a recipe with 18% flaked oats. I've never had a stuck sparge before, but I'm just curious if it may happen and what to do if it does happen!

I also read briefly about a temperature (beta-glucan) rest...any thoughts on this?

It depends on your MT but you are probably fine with only 18%. OTOH a stuck sparge really, really sucks. A few hands of rice hulls are cheap and convenient.

Yeah good idea in the future. Can you buy rice hulls at the supermarket???

I've never seen them at the supermarket around here.  The only experience I have with them says to soak them before using them so they don't suck up your wort.

I've had a stuck spare once.  I blew in the hose and stirred the grain bed.  Fixed.

flaked oats don't seem to be a problem for me...    flaked corn however... can be a nightmare...  especially if it's fine...

when using flaked corn I usually try to add it last so that the majority of it stays towards the upper half of my mash......    no problems with oats..  or flaked wheat or anything else...

Raking the grain bed helps prevent stuck sparges.

If it is getting too compacted I rake the top of the bed with the side of a spoon.
