I did a Fat Tire "clone" recipe a while back with Abbey Ale yeast a while back and I thought it was pretty good.

I have a Fat Tire "clone" that is much like what I remember Fat Tire being like. I haven't brewed it in a while, but I much prefer it over the real thing now.

I don't buy Fat Tire often but when it debuted a couple of years ago in my state I bought a six pack. I enjoyed it.

Hmmm... It's been a few years since I've had it, but I've always felt it was unique among the many American ambers out, which all taste too similar.

I find it quite odd that one would prefer a Coors. Seems overly dramatic to me as a Coors isn't even on the radar. Fine if that's your thing, but to say it's better is quite the pull in my opinion. To each their own though.

Fat Tire doesn't use a Belgian yeast....at least not one that tastes like what most people think of as Belgian.

It's a serviceable beer. I don't buy it, but I won't turn it down.

I don't buy it anymore either, but seeing it in a sampler pack won't deter me. It's not a BMC.

I think the confusion comes into play because of the Breweries name.  I believe they use Wyeast 1272. Correct me if I am wrong.

Ha! I saw a random review of their new gluten reduced golden ale. He was reviewing it as a Belgian style golden ale literally because of the name of the brewery. I am pretty sure it is an American Blonde...

I have heard it might be 1272 they use. That yeast claims to be more flocculant, brings a "nutty" character and also a slight fruit note compared to something like 1056. Anytime I have made my Fat Tire clone I have used US-05 with great results. I have used 1056 and 1272 a time or two with it as well, would have to do it again to really compare, especially so many years later where I could do a better job comparing them.

I would choose a different yeast if you are looking to get close to Fat Tire. As someone mentioned WY1272 might be a good option.

FWIW, here is the malt and hops they provide on their website:

Hops
Willamette, Goldings, Nugget
Malts
Pale, C-80, Munich, Victory
