Hey, at least the store made the sale, right?

I feel that's the reason why many are going belly-up. If someone is told that cascade is a good swap for citra by a shop, then is disappointed that his beer tastes nowhere close to his aim then he or she might not be as enthusiastic about brewing. Making a sale will help the bottom line in the short term, growing a loyal customer into the hobby will provide a long term profit.
I agree 100% Phil. My last comment was sarcastic to show my disdain for the practice of just making the sale. Hopefully the employees in question were actually just trying to help and not "Just making the sale"

I try to give my friend at our LHBS a list of ingredients I need about a month in advance. Especially if it is a unique ingredient. He always has what I need.

That's a great plan. I buy malt and hops in bulk for the bulk of my brewing. I usually just stop in for fresh yeast and the odd hop I may have decided to use spur of the moment. In the OP instance,  I am planning on brewing (still) Wort'Hogs North German Pilsner and he suggested I split the base malt between my Avangard pols and another continental pils, so I was looking for something kind if spur of the moment as this is scheduled for Sunday
